Vacanza, Otranto

For the last three days of our vacation David and I went off alone to explore more of Puglia, and celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. Our first stop was Otranto, about two hours south east of Marina di Ginosa. Otranto is a beautiful walled city right on the Adriatic/Ionian sea, and it is the most Eastern town of Italy! There is a small beach right in town that was packed. Otranto is a beautiful city, all the buildings are white, lots of small alleys with staircases to explore. The sea is an amazing blue/green color similar to the Caribbeans. There is a wonderful castle (Aragonese), the one that Walpole wrote about in his "The Castle of Otranto", an amazing Gothic novel (the first one ever written!). While we were there, it hosted a Dali' illustrations and etchings exhibit. The exhibit was amazing!!! Not only because it was Dali', but also because we got to tour the entire castle and other exhibits. We also went inside San Pietro, a more than 1000 year old Byzantine church reopened in 2009 after being closed for many years. It is a small church with amazing frescoes! It's hard to pick a favorite town, but Otranto is close to the top of our list.
